| 4145 | TOKYO | TOKYO | GRN | News | Japan | 12 September 2007 02:00 Wed | Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has abruptly announced his resignation as Japan's prime minister. Mr Abe has faced growing calls to leave office since his Liberal Democrats lost the upper house in July elections, but had held out, insisting he wanted to push through reforms. However, his poll ratings dropped amid a row over pensions, a series of financial scandals involving cabinet ministers and a crisis over Japan's support for US-led operations in Afghanistan. His party is set to meet on 19 September to choose a new larder who automatically becomes Prime Minister. Liz Noh and Peter Crookes in Tokyo are covering this event. MANILA - Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada has been found guilty of corruption and jailed for life. The former movie star, who was accused of embezzling about $80m before he was forced from office by street protests in 2001, has been ordered to forfeit a mansion and more than $15.5m. Estrada will serve out the sentence, which he described as a political decision by a kangaroo court, under house arrest on his country estate. A spokesman for President Gloria Arroyo has called for calm following the verdict. Dean Bernado in Manila is reporting on this event. ISLAMABAD - Pro-Taliban militants have abducted 12 soldiers from a check post in north-west Pakistan, Pakistani officials say. The militants, who were reportedly armed with rocket launchers and heavy weapons, attacked the troops outside the town of Bannu near the North Waziristan tribal area. This latest kidnapping comes as local tribal elders are negotiating with the rebels to secure the release of scores of soldiers who were abducted in the Ladha area of South Waziristan on 30 August. The rebels say they are now holding about 300 troops. Declan Walsh and Graham Usher in Islamabad are following developments in Pakistan. BOGOTA - The Colombian government has rejected Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's proposal to meet the leader of the FARC rebel group in Colombia. Colombia's peace commissioner, Luis Carlos Restrepo, says the government did not consider the idea viable. Mr Chavez is acting as a mediator in long-stalled negotiations between the government and the left-wing rebels to free hostages held by FARC. Among about 45 prominent hostages held by the rebels are three US defence contractors and former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian citizen. Mike Ceaser in Bogota is following developments in this story. PORTIMAO - A judge is to start examining police files about the disappearance of four-year-old Madeleine McCann. He has 10 days to review the evidence involving Madeleine's parents, who were named as suspects last week. On Monday, police handed their files to Algarve-based prosecutor Jose Cunha de Magalhaes e Meneses, who was responsible for deciding how best to proceed, and after only one day he handed them over to the judge. Possible reasons for his swift behaviour are that he is recommending charging Madeleine's parents or that he is requesting search warrants, more interviews or for stricter bail conditions to be imposed. Kate and Gerry McCann deny involvement in their daughter's disappearance. Paul Luckman in Portimao is following this case.
